An Overview of the Living Building Challenge Part 1

Cotney Construction Law is a Greensboro construction law firm committed to not only helping construction professionals navigate the legal landscape of the construction industry, but we are also committed to providing them with innovative resources that will help them grow their businesses. Green construction is a growing focus within the industry and is beneficial for businesses for a variety of reasons. Green building allows companies to explore ways to build responsibly, reduce waste, and preserve the environment.

The Importance of Sustainability

Sustainability in building design and construction is important. Sustainability entails many things including ensuring that resources are being used in the most efficient way possible during projects and considering how the materials and processes we use impact the environment. As we think about the importance of sustainable construction we must promote methodologies that preserve the environment and keep people safe. As a result, green construction is a growing segment of the construction industry in which contractors should seek certification. We encourage you to seek certification through one of the many programs aimed at increasing sustainability and wellness in building design and construction.

In this two-part series, we will provide an overview of one program: The Living Building Challenge (LBC). Be sure to read part two to learn about the program’s standards. Contact a Greensboro construction lawyer from our firm if you need legal advice.

About The LBC

The LBC is an international sustainable building certification program created by the International Living Future Institute. It combines a strong philosophy with advocacy tools and a certification program that promotes the most advanced measurement of sustainability in building that can be applied to new construction, renovation, infrastructure, landscapes, neighborhoods, and communities.

In his book, Transformational Thought, LBC founder Jason F. McLennan explains:

“Every natural system on the planet is declining at a steadily increasing rate, and The Living Building Challenge addresses this catastrophic failure from all angles, incorporating four signal environmental and social issues: Climate Change; Persistent Toxic Chemicals; Habitat Loss/Species Extinction; and Global Inequity. The Challenge embodies the belief that it is impossible to solve any of these problems in isolation from each other, and that transforming the building industry and built environment will strike at the root causes.”

The Most Ambitious Building Performance Standard

Most construction professionals are familiar with the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED program, The Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star program, and even BREEAM USA. However, The LBC is even more rigorous than the LEED and BREEAM green certification programs. In fact, it is considered the most ambitious building-performance standard in the world.
