Requirements For Different Contracting Licenses Part 1

There are a plethora of contracting licenses available in the State of Florida. There are basic requirements everyone must meet to be eligible for a construction exam. Those requirements are: you must be at least eighteen years of age and you must be of good moral character. Before getting a contracting license, a background check and credit check will be required. Having four years of active experience in the trade/scope of work is a must, along with at least one year of supervisory experience. Though the basic requirements for any contracting license is the same, as Orlando construction attorneys, we can tell you that the requirements for the different types of licenses differ. 1. General Contractor/Building Contractor

When one is applying for a General Contractor or a Building Contractor license, it is required to have at least four years of structurally-related experience in commercial construction of four (three for Building Contractors) or more stories. Experience must fall into these four categories: foundation/slabs, masonry walls, steel erection, precast concrete structures, column erection, or formwork for structural reinforced concrete. In addition, one year of experience must be in a construction project from start to finish and one year of experience as a supervisor.

2. Residential Contractor

To apply for a Residential Contractor’s license, a potential candidate needs to have four years total of structurally-related experience in residential construction in at least four of these categories: foundations/slabs, masonry walls, trusses, structural wood framing, column erection, or formwork for structural reinforced concrete. One year of supervisory experience is also a must.

3. Sheet Metal Contractor

A candidate trying to receive a Sheet Metal Contractor license must have four years of experience in the fabrication and design and installation of duct systems and ventilation systems. One year must include supervisory experience.

4. Roofing Contractor

A Roofing Contractor licensee must have a total of four years of experience in the installation of built-up roofing systems, single-ply stemes, architectural metal roofing, concrete and tile roofing, shingles and shakes, and gutters and downspouts.

5. Drywall Specialty Contractor

To receive a Drywall Specialty Contractor license, candidates must have a total of four years of experience in installation of light steel framing, gypsum board, and finishing. One year must include supervisory experience.
