Extreme Weather and Roofing Part 2

You don’t have to be a roofing professional or a roofing attorney in Florida to realize the impact that extreme weather can have on a roof.

Weather has a major influence on when a roof needs to be repaired or replaced, not to mention that a given geographical area’s weather also dictates how a roof should be routinely maintained. This four-part article addresses numerous aspects of weather and roofing. In Part 1, we discussed tornadoes and snowstorms; today in Part 2 we will cover hurricanes and thunderstorms. In Part 3 and Part 4, we will go over the signs of gradual wear and will also offer some advice on avoiding OSHA citations following a storm that caused widespread damage to your area.

Hurricanes

Any native Floridian is all too familiar with hurricanes, and roofing professionals are uniquely impacted.

Hurricane damage is multifaceted, but can be categorized into two main categories:

  1. Wind
  2. Water

Strong winds can do anything from tear away shingles to take off an entire roof, depending on the strength of the structure and extremity of the storm. It can also cause airborne objects to crash into a home or other building, creating gaps and holes. Water can enter any of these vulnerable areas, often causing thousands of dollars of extra damage, including subsequent leaks, mold, and rot.

Roofing lawyers in Florida have a unique amount of firsthand experience regarding hurricanes and their impact on the construction industry. Of course, hurricanes are not limited to Florida, but they are far more common in the Sunshine State than in our nation’s more landlocked areas.

Thunderstorms

As a roofing professional, you already know that even a commonplace thunderstorm can cause damage to a roof. Old roofs are particularly susceptible, as the wind can more easily lift or damage shingles, allowing water to seep in.

Make sure to recommend to your customers that they keep their roof in good shape and have it checked out regularly.
