Networking Tips for Construction Professionals Part 1

In today’s competitive construction industry, every construction professional is looking for ways to grow their business. There are many methods for accomplishing business growth, but in this short article, we will focus on networking. In this two-part article, our Nashville construction litigation attorneys will define networking and will give a few networking tips.

This first part will focus on joining a trade association and participating in volunteer projects. In the second part, we will share three more tips.

What is Networking?

Networking is the intentional act of sharing information and ideas between individuals with a common interest for mutual benefit. It is an effective way to get to know your fellow contractors, suppliers, and other key construction professionals. Additionally, it is a great way to increase your knowledge and skills to further your career. Networking can also help you generate more business leads and help others develop their business.

Join a Local Trade Association

The first step in networking is to go to where other professionals are — professional trade organizations. If you are focusing on large commercial projects, you can attend charity functions, to network with owners. If your focus is more specific, such as industrial, then you would join an organization that serves those professionals. Trade associations provide their members with business support, group discounts, educational resources, and networking opportunities. Becoming a member of trade associations such as the Associated General Contractors of America, for example, connects you to other professionals and new business prospects.

Participate in Volunteer Projects

Participating in service projects is not only a great source of pride, but it also offers great networking opportunities. While volunteering, you strengthen your current skills while developing new skills in the process. As you are volunteering, you are exposing yourself and your business to a wide range of people, including influential leaders. Your experience on a project can present mentoring opportunities as well as opportunities for business growth.
