The Top 5 States for Jobs in Construction Part 1

Despite an ongoing labor shortage, the construction industry continues to grow and prosper. Our country’s dire need for new infrastructure and affordable housing continues to fuel the construction industry’s engine, but not all states are benefitting from this uptick in construction development, and certain states have boosted their wages to gain favor among transient job seekers.

Evaluating the best states for jobs in construction is inherently subjective, but there’s plenty of evidence to back up the opinions of the Florida construction lawyers at Cotney Attorneys & Consultants. In part one of this two-part guide, we will take a look at two of the best states for construction jobs: Florida and California.

Florida

You can argue that the best states for jobs in construction fluctuate based on need. For example, after Hurricane Katrina, the state of Louisiana had an astronomically high need for construction professionals to help restore the suffering area. However, Florida is both a consistent hotbed for construction and development thanks to the continuous migration of retired baby boomers from the north and the threat of annual hurricanes.

Hurricane Irma pummeled Central Florida, resulting in widespread damage that strained local construction workers. To this day, there is a high demand for construction and recovery services to restore affected areas to their former condition. Roofers, carpenters, and disaster restoration specialists are always in demand thanks to the labor shortage.

Any Florida construction lawyer can tell you that hurricanes are good for business, but the construction law experts at Cotney Attorneys & Consultants know that Florida earned its reputation as one of the top states for construction jobs because of the continuous flow of high-profile construction projects including:

  • $158 million redevelopment project in Tallahassee
  • $300 million Riverwalk Place skyscraper in Tampa
  • The Everglades reservoir
  • Turkey Point Complex nuclear reactors
  • Hyperloop One transport from Miami to Orlando

California

California has been tormented by natural disasters the last few years. The state fought deadly wildfires that seemed to burn on interminably in 2017, and 2018 kicked off with a swath of mudslides that left over a dozen people dead. California’s ongoing battle with recovery requires a revitalized workforce in a time plagued by labor shortages. Construction professionals are lining up to acquire the proper licensing to spread their operations into the most populous state in the union. California’s construction workers earn comparably more than their out-of-state counterparts, and California’s widespread development means there will be plenty of jobs after recovery efforts have concluded.

Florida and California represent two of the top-ranking locations in the United States for construction workers. If you’re interested in learning more about working in one of the best states for construction professionals, read part two.
